Homicide suspect shot, killed by police identified

A Stockton police officer who shot a man to death nearly four years ago was involved in another shooting this week that left a homicide suspect dead.

David Wells, a Field Operations Division officer who was hired in 2003, was one of three officers involved in the shooting Wednesday afternoon near a Walmart in north Stockton. The suspect, identified by police as 39-year-old Antwane Burrise, was taken to an area hospital, where police say he later died.

Wells was cleared two years ago in the 2016 shooting death of 30-year-old Colby Friday.

Stockton Police Department spokesman Officer Joseph Silva confirmed Thursday that the incident Wednesday was Wells’ second fatal shooting in his time working for the department.

“As with all critical incident investigations, (the shooting) will be reviewed by the countywide protocol team, as well as an internal review board,” Silva said.

Burrise wanted in June 1 slaying

Burrise was wanted in connection with the shooting death of 39-year-old Renard Thomas, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in the 300 block of Florence Street just east of downtown Stockton on June 1, Stockton police said in a department Facebook post.

n Wednesday, police had located Burrise inside a vehicle at about noon in an apartment complex in the 5200 block of Cosumnes Drive just off of Trinity Parkway, police said. Officers considered Burrise, who had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with Thomas’ death, armed and dangerous.

Police say Burrise rammed a police car after officers attempted to block him in. Burrise also refused commands to surrender and then at one point accelerated his vehicle backward in the path of an undercover officer.
