San Joaquin County COVID-19 deaths far surpass those caused by the flu over past 10 years

COVID-19 has killed more people in San Joaquin County since March than the flu has over the past 10 years combined.

More than 700 San Joaquin County residents have died from the coronavirus since the pandemic began, while county public health data show the flu killed just under 100 people from 2010 to 2020. It’s also deadlier than pneumonia, which has killed 278 county residents on average every year since 2011.

Influenza season runs from the beginning of fall to mid-spring each year. San Joaquin County Public Health Officer Dr. Maggie Park said that by December 2019 there were just four flu deaths. There have been none reported thus far this season, she said.

“It’s a much more striking disease,” Park said. “People get more severely ill with the COVID than they do the flu.”
